1,804 Installs, One Supporter: How to Support Box Of Rules and What It Would Mean
My plugins have been installed on 1,804 machines that told me about themselves, and about a third of installs opt out of counting, so the true figure is higher. Box of Bass is on 1,545 of them. And since the start, exactly one person has become a supporter, on Ko-fi. I'm not complaining. I gave the plugins away on purpose, knowing I could risk not getting much in return, and I'd do it again. But I want to be straight about what the gap means.
Everything you've seen is one person
I write the songs, play the bass, capture the rigs, write the code, draw the interfaces, sign the builds and answer the support emails. The plugins are free because I wanted my own sound in every session, and sharing them costs me nothing extra. What costs me is time, and time is the thing I have least of.
I have ADHD and autism, and it has taken me nearly two decades of my life to find my voice. An afternoon where nothing else is pulling at me is worth a week of scraps, and right now those afternoons come out of the job that pays the rent. Any support you can give helps me stay true to my passion and keep improving these tools, while being ethical and transparent in an age of obfuscating AI slop. If one in a hundred of those 1,804 installs put in the price of a coffee a month, that is a day a week I could give to this instead of a folder of half-built things.
The tiers, same on Patreon and Ko-fi
Pick whichever platform you already use: Patreon or Ko-fi. The tiers mirror each other exactly.
- £3 Cup Of Coffee. Supporter posts, early access, your name in the thanks of every plugin update.
- £5 Plugged In. All of that, plus the supporter plugins. BR108 today, more to come, and they land here first.
- £15 Dialled In. All of that, plus a custom Box of Bass preset built for you, every month. Send me a DI or tell me what you're chasing.
- £50 In The Room. All of that, plus half an hour on a call with me every month. Your tone, your mix, the plugin you're thinking of building. Only a few of these.
Not a subscription person?
A one-off donation of any size through PayPal works too. And if you'd rather pay for something you can hear, I take commissions on Ko-fi: bass guitar on your song, backing vocals, lead vocals, with the writing as an add-on if you need it. Two rounds of revisions are included in every price, and nothing is ever waived on rights, we agree those separately in writing before I start.
What the data says
The plugins count anonymous usage, and I publish what it says. The first post reviews over 13,000 Box of Bass snapshots: 73% of you mute the DI, 18% run Guitar Mode, and 7% never touch the room mics. It is open to everyone, on Patreon and on Ko-fi.
Prefer to support without spending anything?
Stream the records, share the plugins, tell one bass player. That counts too. And to the one supporter reading this: thank you. You know who you are.
